Let me introduce myself I am Andrea, the creative force behind Andrea A. Photography, I found myself in a situation where I had lost my passion for the art of photography, Running a business it's easy for people to not understand all that encompasses running a viable business, Potential clients are unaware of; the back end systems, legal documents, purchasing the best luxury materials, mentorship, marketing, continued education additional photography equipment, cameras, lighting, backdrops, and the list goes on and on. The financial aspects of running a Photography Business can be daunting.

It's my job to explain to potential clients my pricing packages and photography services are created specifically for each client session to suit their photography needs. I am aware not everyone is my client however, it can be taxing over time. With every Photography business, we have our busy season and we have our slow seasons. I realized these peaks and valleys were affecting my need for creativity. In my quest to rediscover my love for photography, I embarked on a journey that would not only rekindle my passion but also open doors to the rich cultures that this nation has to offer.

Preserving Our Cultural Roots

My vision for this project goes beyond the lens. I believe in the importance of preserving and celebrating our cultural identities. In a world where globalization often threatens to homogenize traditions and heritage, Andrea's project serves as a reminder that we should not lose touch with our roots. Her background is incredibly diverse, but I take immense pride in my Jamaican heritage. It's a source of strength and identity, and I believe that embracing one's culture is essential.

A Glimpse into the Saree's Story

This remarkable journey began with a captivating Mother and Daughter session, I reached out to an old coworker and asked if she could point me in the direction of women from India I have been intrigued with Sarees since I started working for a company over 10 years ago which has a large volume of employees who were from different regions of India.

It was during this time I was introduced to different Indian holiday foods and a bit of their cultures and Religion. I also realized how similar the flavors of Indian dishes were to the food I grew up loving I remembered my grandmother telling me other nations impacted our foods and one of those countries was India ( due to 72 years, from 1845-1917, 37,027 Indians were indentured to Jamaica and leaving their impression on the Caribbean by introducing their foods and seasonings and culture on the island.

It was also during this time I was introduced to the world of the Saree (also spelled Sari). What struck me was the realization that these garments were not just fabrics; they were heirlooms passed down from one generation to another. The Saree, made from specific rare silk materials and adorned with intricate gold threading, held stories of love, family, and tradition.

Discovering the Beauty of Rare Sarees

Driven by curiosity, I delved deeper into the world of Sarees. During my photography session and with a bit of research I discovered that there are five Sarees considered rare and exceptional, each with its own unique story and significance:

  1. Banarasi Saree: Handcrafted in Varanasi, these sarees are characterized by opulence and rich weaves. Originally crafted for royalty, they feature real gold and silver threads, and Mughal-inspired motifs, and are known for their luminosity, making them ideal for bridal wear.

  2. Kanchipuram Saree: Hailing from Tamil Nadu, Kanchipuram silks are known as the 'Queen of Silks.' They are woven with pure mulberry silk and zari, featuring wide contrast borders and designs inspired by South Indian temples and nature.

  3. Paithani Saree: Handcrafted in Maharashtra, Paithani sarees are revered as 'handwoven poems in gold and silk.' They are known for their unique patterns and designs that look the same on both sides, making each saree truly one-of-a-kind.

  4. Baluchari Saree: Originating from Bishnupur village in West Bengal, Baluchari sarees are known for their light texture and depictions of scenes from Mahabharata and Ramayana. They are woven with pure Tussar silk, giving them a distinct look.

  5. Patan Patola Saree: Handcrafted in Gujarat, these sarees are considered the 'ultimate manifestation of weaving perfection.' They are reversible, featuring double ikat weaving techniques, requiring precision, patience, and focus.

I will be saving more of my findings for my magazine. Which will showcase each participant's family, culture, and heritage. I am incredibly thankful for all of the women who were open to sharing their stories and culture with me. It's an honor to capture these moments and learn from these incredibly beautiful families.
